Celexa is generally used to treat depression. This medicine belongs to a group of antidepressants that is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). The drug helps to restore serotonin, a certain chemical in the brain, which controls our mood. Celexa may also be used for other purposes.

What should I know about Celexa?

At first, when you start taking Celexa, or any other antidepressant, you may have thoughts of committing a suicide. You will have to go to regular appointments with your doctor, especially during the first 12 weeks of treatment.

If you have symptoms of worsening of your depression such as: anxiety, agitated, aggressive, trouble sleeping, panic attacks, irritable, hostile, restless, hyperactive, more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself, you should inform your doctor at once.

Celexa may interact with some medicines. Do not take monoamine oxidase inhibitors(MAOIs) such as rasagiline (Azilect), isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) together with Celexa.

How taken?

Take the drug according to the prescription of your doctor. Do not take it in larger doses or for longer periods in order to make it work better.

If you have troubles with your stomach, take the medicine with food.

The results of the work of the medicine won’t be seen immediately. It sometimes takes 4 weeks or longer, before a patient starts to feel better. Do not stop taking the drug without the permission of your doctor.

It is recommended to take the medicine at the same time each day. If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s already time for the next dose, do not take double dose.

Store Celexa at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings/Precautions

To avoid serious and, sometimes, fatal consequences, you mustn’t take MAO inhibitors, if you are using Celexa. You must inform your doctor beforehand if you have bipolar disorder (manic depression), a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts, liver or kidney disease, seizures, epilepsy or if you are allergic to any drugs.

The medicine can bring serious harm to a fetus, if you are pregnant and use the drug. Celexa passes into breast milk, that’s why it’s better to tell your doctor if you are nursing a baby.

Celexa Side effects:

As any other medicine, Celexa can bring several side effects. They can be divided into serious and less serious. Less serious side effects include: drowsiness, dizziness, feeling nervous, restless, ringing in your ears, insomnia, dry or watery mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, upset stomach, decreased sex drive, impotence, weight changes, urinating more than usual, troubles in concentrating.

Inform you doctor at once, if you have serious side effects such as: agitation, confusion, seizure (convulsions), fast heartbeat tremors, shivering, problems with balance or coordination, sweating, muscle stiffness.

You should get emergency medical help immediately if you suspect that you have an allergy. The signs of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, skin rash or hives.

Some other side effects, that are not listed above, may also occur.

Drug interactions:

Inform your doctor before using any medicine for arthritis, fever, pain or swelling, including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), diclofenac (Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), indomethacin, naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), piroxicam (Feldene), nabumetone (Relafen). Tell your doctor beforehand if you are using carbamazepine (Tegretol); a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin); cimetidine (Tagamet); lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith); any other antidepressants such as escitalopram (Lexapro), amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine (Tofranil), sertraline (Zoloft); fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), frovatriptan (Frova), rizatriptan (Maxalt), zolmitriptan (Zomig) and others.
